Woman Speak: The Stories of the Day, is Brightfire Woman's Journal dedicated to events and people in the news.

So... I am not a reporter. I have the highest respect for journalism. This is not journalism; it is what should result from journalism, opinion and acts of self-expression; the birth of something that hopefully adds to the conversation, something that stimulates a social empathy, a common ground of understanding on the subjects of these days in which we live.

Hunt for Albinos in III parts

Yesterday four were sentenced to hang for the murder of a 50 year old Albino man, bringing the total convicted thus far at seven with dozens awaiting trial. In the last two years 50 Albinos have been murdered in Tanzania with another 12 in nearby Burundi. This is something new, witch doctors are primarily healers but greed has had a perverse effect.

The killings have surrounded myths that albinos are not human and that their hair, skin, organs, bones, and genitals have magical powers. A witch doctor can use their various body parts to create a potion or cast a spell for wealth.

The ones benefiting from the slaughter, are at times, the family members who conspire to recieve payment and the killers who are paid to acquire the body parts for a wealthier patron who then provides it to the witch doctor.

I could not find information as to how many have been maimed, but the videos show, that they take what they are after and leave the victim of this violent attack to live or die.

According to the website for the Tanzania Center for Albinos, in Zimbabwe albinistic women are often raped and infected, as it is believed that having sex with them cures HIV. And even if they can escape all of that harm-- due to a high rate skin cancer (limited to no access to sunscreen) their average life expectance is only 40. There are over 200,000 albinos in Tanzania.

Currently their project is to build a factory to manufacture enough sunscreen to protect the population and provide them with the means to earn a living working the factory. They are building a large residence for the children. Many have left their homes to live together for their own safety.
