Among the most heartbreaking is the story of Bebe. She is 17, and she says her face was mutilated by her husband, a Talib. Bebe's nose and ears were cut off as punishment for running away to escape the constant pummeling by her husband and his family. She was married to the radical Muslim when she was 12, Manizha told Sawyer. Her marriage was the result of an outlawed tribal custom called "baad" in which the daughter was given away as compensation for a crime or offense committed by a male member of Bebe's family. Girls given away in baad transactions are often little more than slaves. Bebe was forced to sleep in a stable with the animals, and beatings and pain became part of life for her.

Still, as the more sober event at the State Department drove home, International Women's Day is still an occasion of danger, rather then levity, in some parts of the world.
March 08, 2010 The "Feminist School" website has reported that Iran's greatest living poet, Simin Behbahani, was banned this morning from leaving Tehran. Behbahani had been invited by the mayor of Paris to celebrate International Women's Day at a ceremony in Paris, where she was due to speak.

Behbahani has said that she had prepared a speech about feminism and a poem about women, but at the airport two security agents took her passport away, interrogated her for several hours, and then told her to pick up her passport at the revolutionary court.

In recent years a number of Iranian women's rights activists have been banned from leaving the country, including activist Narguess Mohammadi, lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, and others.

One prominent activist, Noushin Ahmadi Khorasani, has produced a video report about well-known women who have been banned from leaving Iran in recent months (link to the report, in Persian).

Above is the link to my first post on Laura Dekker back in August that has more information on her court woes. I had promised to update and yet when the news hit of her running away... I laughed deeply. She had left her father a note, left her sailboat, Guppy, sitting in dock and took a ton of cash for a kid out the bank and if someone hadn't recognized her...well she would of covered a pretty good distance by now.

A teenager who went missing from her family home in the Netherlands after authorities thwarted her attempt to become the youngest person to sail single-handed around the world has been found alive thousands of miles away on a Caribbean island.

I know there are many people that aren't on board with a 14 year old girl sailing around the world. There are pirates, tsunami, earthquakes and all kinds of nautical lingo of things that raises a land- lover's eyebrows and evidently a government's. However...

This is not an ordinary girl. This is a remarkable girl and she is not alone in this dream. There are two young women out sailing for all they are worth to set their records right NOW, Jessica Watson, from Australia should finish first, followed by, Abby Sunderland, from Marina Del Rey, California.

This is an interference in parental rights.

This is holding her against her will and her custodial parent's will in the Netherlands, she holds citizenship in two additional countries. They won't let her travel. And if she does, they are revoking her father's parental rights.

It was ruled by the court that she is skilled and mature enough; she was denied her trip because they felt she would not get her education or be able to handle the psychological aspects of being alone that long. There is no better education. And if they were concerned about the psychological, perhaps they should have thought about the stress of parents without rights and threats of no rights and holding her in a country against her will.

I have read the Koran, I would recommend that everyone read it. This is not the Koran. This is extreme, this is take over the world and enforce your beliefs. Religious Police is the most frightening Gestapo concept and it scares me that a young girl would be lashed 50 times for a skirt that bared her calves, by those given a position of power to violate her legal and civil rights.

Fifty lashes is out and out child abuse... severe abuse! If any religious group here, were to send out members to bring teenagers in off the street against their will to a location to be judged and beaten for breaking their laws, they would be in prision for kidnapping and assault and a slew of charges that would definitely put them in prison. Violent criminal behavior should not be a response to modest knee length apparel.

Source: Teenager lashed for wearing knee-length skirt (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34170961/ns/world_news-africa/) - The case will add fuel to a debate already raging over Sudan's decency laws after this year's high-profile conviction

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.womansmojorisings.com/woman-speak/2009/11/29/red-cross-and-crescent-society-report-on-albino-killings-nai.html"><rss:title>Red Cross and Crescent Society Report on Albino Killings ~ Nairobi, Kenya</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.womansmojorisings.com/woman-speak/2009/11/29/red-cross-and-crescent-society-report-on-albino-killings-nai.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Africa Albino Burundi Creswent Society Nairobi Killings Red Cross kenya tTanzania</dc:subject>

Read Poem, 'For Gasper Elikana' in Brightfire Woman's Creative Writing Journal, Word Warrior : http://www.womansmojorisings.com/word-warrior/2009/11/30/for-gasper-elikana-verse.html

Since 2007, 44 albinos have been killed in Tanzania and 14 others have been slain in Burundi, sparking widespread fear among albinos in East Africa. At least 10,000 have been displaced or gone into hiding since the killings began, according to a report released this week by the International Federation for the Red Cross and Crescent societies.

The world is changing, call it global warming, call it eating things into extinction, Africa is the beginning of seeing the results of what scientists have been trying to tell us. People whose culture is deeply rooted in ritual tribal magic are frightened and as in any culture there is an element within it, that makes a living off of a bad situation.

This is not to say all witch doctor's are frauds or con artists or participating in this. but some are. Some witch doctors say the situation is the fault of rich Europeans offering exorbitant amounts for the body parts and services.

What was previously limited to Albino hair wove into a fisherman's net for luck and large catches with fish shortages and other non suitable for eating species growing unchecked, the search for hair to bring luck has risen and brought this whole life threatening talisman and charms to this nightmare of greed and profiting from fear and superstition.

The surge in the use of albino body parts as good luck charms is a result of "a kind of marketing exercise by witch doctors," the International Federation for the Red Cross and Crescent societies said.

The report says the market for albino parts exists mainly in Tanzania, where a complete set of body parts — including all limbs, genitals, ears, tongue and nose — can sell for $75,000. Wealthy buyers use the parts as talismans to bring them wealth and good fortune.

Report unveils plight of Great Lakes albinos
19 November 2009

The killings of albino people in Burundi and Tanzania, based on occult practices, have triggered a crisis involving almost the entire albino population of the two countries, according to a report released today by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

The report, called Through Albino Eyes, says that as many as 300 children and teenagers are now in hiding and stranded in Tanzanian schools for the disabled or in emergency shelters established by the police in Burundi, where they exist in dire conditions.

Thousands more albinos across a huge swathe of countryside – perhaps as many as 10,000 – are unable to move freely to trade, study or cultivate fields for fear of albino hunters in search of body parts and hired mainly by witch doctors and big-money traders.

In the words of one local Red Cross worker, albinos are “hiding in their backyards”, their lives on hold.

The Tanzania Red Cross Society (TRCS) intends to provide health education about skin care, protective wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts and vocational teaching equipment that will improve chances of finding indoor employment.

Salif Keita, the Malian albino singer and human rights activist said that “even before the killings began two years ago, albino people in tropical Africa suffered an array of afflictions that made physical survival a desperate struggle”.

“These included, above all, needlessly high rates of fatal skin cancer that are the result of their acute sensitivity to sunlight.”

IFRC Secretary General Bekele Geleta described albinism as “one of the most unfortunate vulnerabilities, that needs to be addressed immediately at the international level”.

“Our national societies closest to this tragic story have responded well, and they will continue focusing on areas where they can really add value – like public-health education and anti-discrimination awareness raising.”

The local humanitarian response to the albino emergency last year was largely coordinated by branches of the Red Cross societies in both countries, but urgently needs external support, according to the IFRC’s report.

Peter Mlebusi, the TRCS deputy secretary-general, said the crisis is now essentially fourfold: “It is a health problem because of the skin cancer risk. It is a stigma and discrimination problem in the community. There is also insecurity because of the ‘mythology’ of the wealth that can be generated by selling parts of albino bodies. And, finally, there is a legal issue because of the painfully slow process involved in dealing with the killings.”

“Once these people are identified by our volunteers an expanded Red Cross program will make a huge difference to their lives,” adds Dr. Mohammed.

Most recently, on 21 October, while IFRC was conducting the field research for its report, a ten year old albino boy, Gasper Elikana, was killed by hunters. His neighbours and his father had tried bravely but unsuccessfully to protect him.

The secretary general the Burundi Red Cross, Anselme Katyunguruza, emphasized that his organization was “committed to work with the authorities in our country to put an end to these killings and secure a life of dignity for our albino brothers and sisters.”

The official death toll now stands at 44 albinos killed in Tanzania and 12 in the eastern Burundian provinces of Cankuzo, Kirundo, Muyinga and Ruyigi – on or near the border with Tanzania. Private organizations and some media in Tanzania have put the number higher, at more than 50 deaths.

In Burundi, to an even greater extent than in Tanzania, the total albino population is an unknown quantity, but the best estimate according to the local Red Cross is that there are at least 1,000 albinos countrywide.

The number of officially registered albinos in Tanzania is just under 7,000, but again some groups and media put the number much higher, and this total includes only people who have come forward voluntarily to register.

Yesterday four were sentenced to hang for the murder of a 50 year old Albino man, bringing the total convicted thus far at seven with dozens awaiting trial. In the last two years 50 Albinos have been murdered in Tanzania with another 12 in nearby Burundi. This is something new, witch doctors are primarily healers but greed has had a perverse effect.

The killings have surrounded myths that albinos are not human and that their hair, skin, organs, bones, and genitals have magical powers. A witch doctor can use their various body parts to create a potion or cast a spell for wealth.

The ones benefiting from the slaughter, are at times, the family members who conspire to recieve payment and the killers who are paid to acquire the body parts for a wealthier patron who then provides it to the witch doctor.

I could not find information as to how many have been maimed, but the videos show, that they take what they are after and leave the victim of this violent attack to live or die.

According to the website for the Tanzania Center for Albinos, in Zimbabwe albinistic women are often raped and infected, as it is believed that having sex with them cures HIV. And even if they can escape all of that harm-- due to a high rate skin cancer (limited to no access to sunscreen) their average life expectance is only 40. There are over 200,000 albinos in Tanzania.

http://tanzaniaalbino.org/

Currently their project is to build a factory to manufacture enough sunscreen to protect the population and provide them with the means to earn a living working the factory. They are building a large residence for the children. Many have left their homes to live together for their own safety.

And finally I end this journey with watching an absolutely delightful young woman's you tube channel, "Hi the is Me Live with it". It is just so honest, unvarnished, and straightforward ~

My grandmother was married and bore her first child( my mother) of the dozen she would bare, at the young age of just turned 14. The one thing about her life that stands out the most in my memory of her, as she died at a rather young age, in her late 50's, is how beautiful her gardens always were no matter where they lived.

A couple weeks ago, I stood looking out my back door at my garden, so glorious and colorful and I understood something I had been too young to see about my grandmother, my mother and myself... that is what unhappy women struggling in difficult times do.. create beauty with wild colors.
