Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 3:52PM Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno First Woman to be Caned in Malaysia
I wanted to do something special for Kartika, so below are 5 Videos that track to date her circumstances and give varied insights into her circumstances, and the Law. You will see that she has been denied public caning and after going through her goodbyes, the vehicle did turn around as a call came that it would postponed due to a fasting Muslim religious holiday, the last video raises some interesting issues that it maybe the world publicity and public pressure. Please feel to embed or email this play list! These actions are being strongly disputed as she paid over 1000 US dollars in fines already for her offense. I will be updating this post to the end of her ordeal~ so check back and I do welcome comments, Thank you!

I found a good article written after this post: "Should a Muslim Mother Be Caned for Drinking a Beer" written by Baradan Kuppusamy/Kuala Lumpur.
"Malaysia operates a dual-track legal system, in which Muslims are bound by Shari'a law for certain issues, while non-Muslims are processed through civil courts. While alcohol consumption is illegal for Muslims according to Shari'a law, many people of the Islamic faith in Malaysia do drink and prosecution for such a crime is rare."
Prisons Department officials are also facing a dilemma of how to carry out the caning. "We have have never done it to a woman and we don't know how to do it," said a department senior official who asked not to be named. There is not a single female in the department trained in the "Islamic way" to cane. Nevertheless, prominent Islamic officials in Malaysia have expressed disappointment at the reprieve. "The punishment is light and designed to shame, not to cause physically pain," Harussani Zakaria, an influential cleric, told TIME. "It must be carried out." Counters Amnesty International's Malaysia director Nora Murat: "Whipping is a form of torture and should not be condoned."

If it is light and to shame and not intended to cause pain then why was she denied the public humiliation???? Why is it being done privately free from the world's eyes?
